Canon A620 Hacks

Submitted by drewzhrodague on Mon, 2005-11-28 00:21.

I just got myself a new Canon Powershot A620 camera, and I have been having a blast with this thing. I've had a chance to monkey with it, and take a few different pictures in a variety of situations. This thread isn't a review, but tips, tricks, and hacks, for what had been a truly great digital camera.

On October 17th, I found this Canon A620 Kit with Lenses being sold by Digital Innovations NY. Good deal, I thought, because the camera came with a bunch of accessories that I wanted, was an all-in-one kit, and I also couldn't find the camera AND wide/tele lenses for less than the price of this kit. It was really a ton of stuff: Camera, adaptor tube, .5 wide angle, 2x telephoto, 1G SD card, tiny SD card reader, large and small tripods, 2500 mAh batteries with charger, cleaning kit, filters, camera bag, and stuff I prolly forgot -- a complete kit.

So, I called up Ed on the phone beforehand, just to make sure things were legit. The most important thing for me was the wide angle lens, and ability to use the lens in the kit, with the camera -- just wanted to make sure. Ed assured me that everything in the kit would work together, and that I'd be happy with the package, so I bought it.

Ed assured me that it was going to ship after the payment was made, which I pretty-much did instantly. He even sent me a note saying it would be expedited, instead of waiting for a couple days for processing, and that it only takes a couple of days to ship from New York to Pennsylvania. I was psyched, and waited patiently.

That Friday, I hadn't received a tracking number so I sent an email, and asked for one. The response came on Monday, which said the package was mailed after payment. Ah, any day now.

Back and forth with email and phone calls for a couple of weeks, and the package finally arrived on the 31st, two weeks after purchase. Unfortunately, the kit was missing the tripod carying case, and they sent the wrong adaptor tube, which meant that I could not use the wide or telephoto lenses with the camera -- the entire point of me purchasing the kit in the first place!

So, I called and talked to Josh, who assured me that they would take care of the situation. So I waited patiently, for another week, and then sent another email, and back and forth with email, and phone calls -- for the entire month of November. Each time, assuring me that they'd correct the situation, and send things out to me.

Now they want to send me different lenses, which use a magnetic mount, instead of an adaptor tube. I am hesitant to accept, as the other lenses and filters that I already own are all of the threaded kind.

So I spoke to them on the phone on Thursday, and specified that I was not interested in the magnetic lenses, and that they should wait until the new threaded adaptor comes-in, and send me one of those. This way, the filters, wide, and telephoto lenses will fit.

I asked them to wait, but I am not waiting. Still looking for an LA-DC58F Lens Adaptor for the Canon A620 from another vendor.

I eventually ordered the LA-DC58F lens adaptor from another company. Unfortunately, the lenses that came with the kit were 52mm, and did not fit onto the adaptor.

After lots of calling them, and emails, I eventually received all of the pieces that were supposed to be in the kit, including a cary case for the tripod (which was another battle). It pays to be annoying, but you do end up wasting lots of time on stupid things like this.

I just tried the CHDK firmware for my camera, and I am pleased that it works!

Unfortunately, I had to upgrade my camera to a later version of Canon's software, but I don't see this as much of a problem -- even though Canon did not publish this information. Thanks to the Internet, my camera has enhanced features, and a later version of the firmware to boot.
